The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, also known simply as the Prado car, is getting a major upgrade in Japan. The new Toyota Prado will now offer not one, but two hybrid powertrains. The 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine will receive an electrical boost from two motors powered by a lithium-ion battery. Although it’s not yet confirmed, the Toyota Prado may also receive the RAV4’s eFour system, which features a single motor driving the rear wheels.

Expect the power output of the Toyota Prado to significantly increase, with torque reaching 500Nm, making it a popular choice for towing. In addition to the diesel hybrid, there will also be a petrol-based hybrid, though details about this variant are limited at the moment. It’s possible that the Toyota Prado will use either a 2.5-liter engine or the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine from the Lexus NX 350.

While the Toyota Prado is only sold with a diesel engine in Australia, in Japan, both fuel types are offered and the petrol version is more popular. Given the shared powertrains between the Prado and HiLux, it’s possible that the new hybrid powertrains may also be available in Australia’s best-selling ute.

Information about the new Toyota Prado is scarce at the moment, but it’s expected to feature a modified version of the 300 Series/Tundra’s GA-F body-on-frame platform. Despite retaining the wheelbase and length of the 200 Series, Toyota assures us that the GA-F platform will be all-new.
